It hits the face of the extractor slot, and stops the slide just short of battery. If I just put my thumb on back of slide it goes into place easily.If you can manually lock the slide to the rear, insert the magazine, and then try to remove it by pulling on the base. If it comes out, you either have a defective magazine release, or a defective magazine, if you have more than 1 magazine, does it do it with both.
